Our Circuits, Packages and Specials > Tiger Quests
Over ten years ago, Malcolm Meintjes well-known author flyfisher developed the unique Tiger Quest concept and these Quests are now run in conjunction with Islands in Africa at Impalila Island Lodge. These are hosted fly fishing Tigerfish trips that offer small groups accelerated learning of new techniques, tackle and flies. Given the benefit of Malcolm's extensive experience and knowledge off fly fishing the surrounding waters, visitors can enjoy more productive time on the water.
Malcolm personally hosts and mentors each Quest group, recommending areas of the Zambezi/Kasai/Chobe/Indibi/Mambova Rapids to fish, flies to use and the techniques to employ. In addition to general feedback sessions, Malcolm also shares time personally with each member of the group. This gives Malcolm time not only to mentor beginners and assist experienced anglers alike but also to spend individual sessions fishing with them. Indeed, some specimen fish were landed by anglers who had only picked up a fly rod on their first afternoon.
Thus, while wild fish are never predictable, Quests greatly enhance your chances of coming to grips with a double-figure Tigerfish - though landing them is a far more challenging affair!
For the 2008 Quest season, which began in Jun through to end December, a record number of big Tigerfish were landed on fly by Quest members, including 15 fish over the specimen 10 lb. mark, while in the last Quest of the season the biggest tiger was landed - a monster of around 17 lbs.
While the Quests focus on Tigerfish, there are other fish species an angler can fish for, which include the coveted nembwe (Olive bream) tilapia species such as the Threespot tilapia, as well as the Sharptooth catfish (commonly known as barbel).
Being hosted at Impalila Island Lodge, where personalized service and attention to detail are prominent, the Quest offers a combination of a excellent fly fishing, beautiful setting, relaxed and comfortable lodge atmosphere, excellent bird and game sightings from the river that ensure an unforgettable experience.
The special Tiger Quest packages are ideal for groups of like-minded anglers, friends and family and, especially, for corporate groups wishing to give their clients a 'new' experience bon the Zambezi River.
